Welcome to "Upcycle Fashion," where creativity meets sustainability in a journey to reimagine and revive a garment.

Join us each week to explore techniques that breathe new life into your existing garments, giving them a personalised touch and an extended lease on life.

Week 1: Beaded Creations class complete 22nd April

Unlock your creativity and dive into the world of beaded jewelry making! In this workshop, you'll have access to all the tools and notions needed to craft stunning necklaces, earrings, and bracelets. Let your imagination run wild as you explore different bead combinations and techniques. With guidance from Emily, you'll learn to create as many dazzling pieces as you can in the allotted time.

Week 2: Design Phase for a Hoodie or Jumper

Get ready to design your own statement piece! Bring your hoodie or jumper (provided by Emily) and embark on a journey of creative exploration. Through research, brainstorming, and sketching, you'll develop unique ideas for embellishing your garment. Consider incorporating beads, buttons, charms, fabric paint, markers, applique, or embroidery to bring your vision to life.

Week 3 and 4: Creation Phase for your Hoodie or Jumper

It's time to turn your design dreams into reality! With Emily's expert guidance, you'll learn techniques to transform your garment into a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. From stitching to embellishing, you'll bring your design to life using a variety of creative methods. Whether you're adding intricate beadwork or playful embroidery, these sessions will empower you to express your style in a truly unique way.

Week 5: Tie Dye/Painting with Dyes

Unleash your inner artist and explore the vibrant world of tie-dye and fabric painting! Experiment with different dyeing techniques to create bold and colourful patterns on your garments. Whether you're going for a psychedelic swirl or a chic ombre effect, this workshop is all about letting your creativity flow freely.

Week 6 and 7: Leather Painting:

Discover the beauty of leather painting and transform ordinary leather panels into stunning accessories! Bring your own shoes, bag, or belt (optional) or use the provided leather panels to create personalized items such as bags, earrings, or keychains. You'll learn painting techniques to add unique designs and embellishments to your leather creations.

Week 8: Personalised Beret

Put the finishing touch on your wardrobe with a personalised beret! Using a handmade beret provided by Emily, you'll have the opportunity to adorn it with beads, gems, pom-poms, or embroidered designs of your choosing. Let your imagination soar as you create a head-turning accessory that reflects your individual style and personality.

Workshops run from 4:30pm - 6:00pm Mondays at Bluebird House (Cnr Carr & Swanston Streets, South Geelong). Please note no class Monday 10 June for Kings Birthday Public Holiday. Commencing Monday 22 April until 17th June for Term Two 2024 (8 weeks).

Bookings are non-refundable but, should you be unable to attend, your place can be transferred to a friend. Please contact us if you should need to transfer your booking.

We believe that the arts play an important role in community wellbeing and with sensible precautions in place, we can provide programs at Bluebird House. Our guidelines have been informed by the Victorian Department of Health. All participants will be required to adhere to Bluebird Foundation’s COVIDSafe Plan.

Local artist, Emily Rastas

Emily Rastas

Emily Rastas, Finnish-Australian artist and designer currently working and living in Geelong, working predominantly in the realms of painting, wearable art, sculpture, apparel and installation. Emily is passionate about sustainability and slow fashion, her brand Emipeli Design sells her upcycled clothing range, hand painted shoes and boots, and unique accessories made from discarded fabric waste. 

Emily has been making her own clothing since she was 12 years old and knew from an early age she wanted to be making and designing clothing, briefly studying Fashion at RMIT before spontaneously moving to Europe shortly before her 19th birthday and pursuing costume design, working behind the scenes in theater productions, collaborating with artists and drag queens and on music video sets. During that time Emily also studied SFX and Prosthetic makeup and continued to build her portfolio in design. It was only when moving back to Victoria three years ago that she discovered a love of painting and installation. 

Constantly trying new mediums and combining different techniques, her work seeks to envelop wearer of her creation within a sense of confidence and joy, and for the viewer of her artworks to feel, with emphasis on the healing potential of art.
